Gunfire Exchange Near Cathedral Traffic Circle

According to eyewitness accounts, at approximately 6:00 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, May 20, there was a heavy exchange of gunfire near the Maseru Cathedral traffic circle. There were no reported injuries. The precipitating cause of the event is unclear, although reports indicate that unknown gunmen exchanged fire with security officials. The perpetrators may still be at large.
There is no indication that the May 20 event or other recent violence was directed at U.S. citizens or foreigners generally.
To increase your security awareness, the U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Lesotho to avoid walking at night, avoid casual walking during the daytime, minimize driving at night, and remain aware of your surroundings, especially within the capital city of Maseru.
