U.S. Embassy to Donate Clothes, School Supplies to Lesotho Save the Children

On Monday, May 07, 2007, the U.S. Embassy to Lesotho through its Special Projects Coordinating Office will visit Lesotho Save the Children (LSC) to donate clothing and school supplies.

The clothing has been donated by various groups, including the U.S. National Association of Negro Business and Professional Clubs (States of New York and Alabama) and former and current employees of the U.S. Embassy.  School supplies were donated by Ms. Ellen Kelly Smith, who visited LSC in January 2006.  These school supplies include books, crayons, chalk, children’s scissors, paper, a puzzle and an alphabet board.  Some of the books were given by children in the Millbury Camp Fire Group in Millbury, Massachusetts.

Lesotho Save the Children was established in 1961.  In 1979, LSC was registered as an independent local non-governmental organization in Lesotho.  It runs the “Maseru Children’s Village” (MCV), which provides a temporary home for abused, neglected, abandoned, and orphaned children who are identified by the Department of Social Welfare and the police.

Through the U.S. Ambassador’s Self-Help Program, LSC received household appliances, various equipment, and support for the renovation of a children’s playground.  The U.S. Embassy and LSC have also been running the Ambassador’s Girls’ Scholarship Program (AGSP) since 2005, through which the school expenses of 172 girls from Grades 1 through 10 are supported.  Mentoring and HIV/AIDS mitigation workshops are an important feature of this program for girls.

For further information, please contact Ms. Ma-Lord Mefane of the Public Affairs section of the U.S. Embassy at 22-312-666
