Dear Fellow American Citizens in Lesotho
According to media reports and local observers, Lesotho’s opposition alliance of leading political parties has announced an indefinite "stay-way" (i.e. work stoppage or strike) beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, December 11. The U.S. Embassy will remain open during regular business hours. The Embassy does not have specific information whether the "stay-away" will actually take place and/or be widely observed.
In March 2007, similar action in the form of a "stay away"disrupted transportation and other commercial services.
As a precautionary measure, the Embassy advises all U.S. citizens to remain extra vigilant and to monitor e-mail, the Embassy website, and other communication sources. We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid any areas of demonstration, large crowds, and/or confrontational situations and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any such gatherings.
We continue to encourage U.S. citizens living in or traveling in Lesotho to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov/, and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Lesotho. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy.
