Warden Messages
U.S. Embassy Maseru, Lesotho
Warden Message
March 19, 2007
Dear Fellow American Citizens in Lesotho:
A massive, political, opposition-led work stoppage locally referred to as a "work stay away" went into effect on Monday, March 19. The stay away is planned to last through Wednesday, March 21. The U.S. Embassy has actively monitored the stay away. From the early morning hours of March 19, makeshift roadblocks appeared on a number of key roads in and around Maseru. There were virtually no taxi and other public transportation all day. Most shops, factories, and service stations remained closed. There have been reports of isolated security incidents in various parts of the city. Generally, the situation around Maseru remains relatively calm, but tense.
Please continue taking the increased security precautions the Embassy advised in the last several notices.
In addition, we continue to encourage U.S. citizens living in or traveling in Lesotho to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov/, and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Lesotho. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy.
