Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program, 2010-2011

The Fulbright Junior Staff Development (JSD) program is a scholarship fund designed to strengthen the faculties of universities and staff of educational and cultural institutions. The program also includes staff from government and the private sector in Lesotho.  Through this scholarship program, candidates may pursue a Ph. D., Master's or non-degree study program for one year at a university or research institution.  The JSD grants are for one degree only and the maximum grant period for Ph.D. students is two years.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be Lesotho Citizens.
  • The competition for JSD grants is great. Applicants who have not yet studied in the U.S. and have not spent significant time abroad will be given preference.  Applicants must have had at least three years of work experience.
  • Applicants should apply to be candidates for an advanced degree in their current field, to pursue studies in another field if they have an adequate background, or spend up to one year in a specialized field for which they are well prepared.  They must have outstanding academic records, academic / professional references, and preparation in their chosen field.
  • Applicants should be strongly motivated and seriously committed to completion of an advanced degree program before returning to their home country.  In addition, they should have exceptional potential to make significant contributions in their professions.
  • They must demonstrate a level of English proficiency that will enable them to use their time in the U.S. to their best academic advantage.  Candidates will be asked to fill out online application forms, obtain necessary references, and take standard computer based tests such as TOEFL and GRE (or GMAT).

Applications for academic year 2010 are now closed.  Applications for 2011 will be open in  November of 2009.

Although nominees may make suggestions about where they wish to be placed, the Fulbright Program implementing organization, Institute of International Education (IIE), decides on students’ final placement based on the nominee's background and the availability of positions at U.S. universities.
