W. Patrick Murphy
Patrick Murphy joined the Foreign Service in 1992. He has served in Rangoon, Conakry, Guangzhou, Bamako, and in Washington (where he worked on Laos, Burma, and Haiti). He received an M.A. in international relations from Johns Hopkins University, a B.A. in Canadian studies and political science from the University of Vermont, and attended the Institut Européen in France. Patrick was previously a resource economist for the World Wildlife Fund, a policy analyst for the Overseas Development Council, and author of articles on U.S. development and foreign policy. He also worked in television and radio production.
Patrick was a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon (1985-1988) and taught French in Washington, D.C. His foreign languages are French, Burmese, Spanish, and Cantonese. He is married to Kathleen Norman, a Sinologist and development specialist. They have a son, Seamus (9), and two daughters, Meghan (7) and Gillian (4). Patrick enjoys long distance running, hiking, camping, golf, and tennis.
