Michele Thoren Bond
United States Ambassador to Maseru, Lesotho
Michele Thoren Bond has been Ambassador to the Kingdom of Lesotho since October 2010. The U.S. Embassy works closely with the Government of Lesotho in support of initiatives to further good governance and economic development. Through Lesotho’s Millennium Challenge Compact and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) programs, the Embassy and the Government collaborate on health and nutrition, water, climate change and trade development, among other development priorities.
Ambassador Bond holds the rank of Minister-Counselor in the Senior Foreign Service. She is a former Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) for Overseas Citizens Services (CA/OCS) in the Bureau of Consular Affairs and served as U.S. Consul General in Amsterdam. Her other overseas assignments were in Guatemala City, Belgrade, Prague and Moscow. Washington assignments have included Director of Consular Affairs’ Office of Public Outreach, Director of Consular Training at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center, and a tour in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.
An honors graduate of Wellesley College, Ambassador Bond has Masters Degrees from Georgetown University and the National War College. She speaks Spanish, French, Serbian and Swedish.
Ambassador Bond is married to Clifford G. Bond, a retired Foreign Service officer and former Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina. They have four adult children.
